Paul's Case Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Paul's Case - Research Paper Example These feelings, combined with all of the pressures surrounding him, alienate Paul from any chance of normalcy. However, it has only been within the past three decades that critics have begun talking about the homosexual undertones of the story – that perhaps Paul’s difference is the result of his homosexual tendencies and his despair is due to his awareness that these tendencies place him forever outside of the community he so desperately wants to be a part of. From this perspective, the ugliness of the world around him becomes a metaphor for the ugliness of a world that refuses to accept a person simply because they feel greater attraction to persons of their own gender rather than the opposite. To read the story as an example of the male homosexual literary tradition, many of the ‘coded passages’ referred to by Larry Rubin become clear. It is primarily through Paul’s eyes that the reader is first made aware that perhaps he doesnt see things in the same way as those around him do. These eyes are described as having a "certain hysterical brilliancy, and he continually used them in a conscious, theatrical sort of way, peculiarly offensive in a boy. The pupils were abnormally large, as though he were addicted to belladonna, but there was a glassy glitter about them which that drug does not produce" (79). Larry Rubin points to these eyes as the first of several examples in the story that contain coded hints that Paul has homosexual tendencies. Other clues that he mentions in his article include the careful way that Paul dresses, his odd relationship with boys who are slightly older and his night on the town with the Yale freshman followed by their ‘cool’ parting which Rubin points out leaves the reader â€Å"with an unshakeable sense of innuendo† (1975: 130). Roger Austen concurs with these el ements of the story as being intentional indications of Paul’s sexual preference. In scenes such as the disapproval Paul receives because of

Good Fellas Essay Example for Free

Good Fellas Essay During the years of adolescence, children tend to conjure up ideas of what life will be like as an adult. Some dream of becoming a firefighter, some a teacher, but young Henry Hill is not like most children. He dreams of becoming a mob member and spends his time fantasizing about the cars and women that will come with the title. In the film Good Fellas, Martin Scorsese uses repetitive violence and poor decisions to show Henry Hill that material possessions and status are not of importance when you are reprimanded by the law, and further, how people in society tend to become blind by fortune and do not think about the consequences they could face by their actions. Scorsese creates a strong sense of what life is like for an Italian American, who is involved in the Mafia. Between the mass amount of mob movies and the reality shows available on cable, the stereotypes of Italians are not too keen. Before meeting an Italian American, a person who is over interested in food, tan, loud, hot tempered and obnoxious comes to mind. In some cases even a visual of a mob member. In this movie, Scorsese focuses on the way the mob members dress and eat, which helps create a strong image for the viewer of what is important to these characters. Once Henry started to become involved in the mob’s activities, he started to dress like them, â€Å"You look like a gangster,† his mother was appalled by his appearance. This is the first time the stereotype of how a member of a mob dressed is acknowledged. Henry shows up on the door step of his parent’s house at a young age, wearing a pressed suit and sparkling black dress shoes. He had used his earnings from the restaurant to make what he thought was an everlasting impression and to show his growing status. Shortly after Henry marries Karen, she is invited to a mob wife’s hostess party. She shows up in a designer dress and notices that â€Å"these women appear to be wearing thrown together pants suits and wearing worn makeup,† to her disgust. Later as the movie progresses Karen herself begins to adapt to this look as well. This is scene when appearances become less important and survival according to the demands of the mob is more of a focus. The aspect that never changes is how important a good meal is no matter what is going on around them and focus on the present tense. Even when Henry and Tommy have a man in the trunk, they think nothing of parking the car in a residential driveway to have a hearty meal with Tommy’s mom. Whenever life takes a turn for the worse, all is lost and the men are in prison, they still manage to prepare a five coarse meal. It is the only thing that gives them a sense of home. The members of the mob lived on the code of respect; if this was forgotten then they were forfeiting the safety that comes with being part of the crew. They were to respect the Boss and listen to whatever advice that was given. If a member were to go against him, there were consequences, â€Å"murder was the only way to keep everyone in line, if you got out of line, you got wacked,† there was no room for mistakes. It was seldom that a second chance would be granted. Once a member of the mob worked their way to the top and proved that they were loyal, they were treated extremely well. Not only did people within the mob know their status but onlookers knew as well. Henry enjoyes the amount of respect he received, he was not at the top but still had the power. He â€Å"didn’t have to wait for [his] fresh bread at the bakery, neighbors didn’t park in their driveway anymore, and the kids in the neighborhood would carry [his] mother’s groceries home for her. † This was just the beginning because as Henry grew older, he received this kind of treatment everywhere he went. Life was good. The luxuries Henry had did not come from volunteering within the community or going to college to earn a degree. These men were well known but not for their good doings. Henry explains it as being as an easy job, â€Å"if we wanted something we just took it, if someone complained they got hit so bad they didn’t again,† violence and crime was the only way to go for them. The people within the community feared them and if the police came after them, they would just pay them off or murder them and dispose of the body so it could not be pinned back on any of them. In order to become completely untouchable from the outsiders as well as the members within the mob, although, they needed Pauly. These members would go to Pauly for help, when they could not go to the police. The only problems with this is Pauly is not cheap and they needed to play by his rules. If his help was needed, he was to be paid weekly and no excuse was good enough for not having his cut when it was due. Scorsese uses violence and crime to show there was more to life than the money and fun that came along with it. It takes a bit of dirty work to get high end items if the hard work isn’t done to allow for the high end job. The members of the mob and their wives see life a bit differently than the typical working American. Henry’s wife Karen addresses this by saying â€Å"Our husbands are not Brain Surgeons; they were blue collar guys who go out and cut a few corners. † She did not see anything wrong in what Henry does as long as he comes home and treats her with all the luxuries she has become accustomed to, nothing else mattered. Henry and his accomplices did not think anything was wrong with how they lived. They enjoyed themselves and were aware of the consequences, but did not fret about them, â€Å"no one goes to jail unless they want to,† Pauly offered protection and as long as the rules were followed there was nothing to worry about. In order to get by, Henry would do everything from boot leg cigarettes, steal cargo, deal drugs and would kill anyone who gets in the way. The two that must be followed were, do not kill a Made man, which is a boss, unless you have permission and make sure you pay Pauly. Henry was living a fabulous life until he started making some bad decisions, got careless and broke the rules. Now the consequences that have been threatened have caught up with him and are starting to give him a rude awakening of what life really can be like for the average person, who does not belong to a powerful family, such as his. Henry was living life day by day and getting by doing whatever he pleases. He had the respect, the power and the wealth that he dreamt of as a young boy. But in the end it didn’t add up, he was left with nothing. All due to a few bad decisions, the materialistic rubbish and money caused Henry to be blinded from what truly should be important in life, he had cut off relationships with all of his real family and now had no one to turn to. Pauly had warned him not to get involved in the scandal that his two close accomplices Tommy and Johnny were getting involved in, but after Henry gets put into prison, he runs out of resources and needs money fast. â€Å"When you go away you are on your own,† because Pauly did not help Karen, while Henry was in jail he decides that instead of asking Pauly for help when he gets out he would take care of this misfortune of his own. He doesn’t feel as if he owes Pauly anything because Pauly did not offer help when he needed him the most. Henry locates Tommy and Johnny and creates a multimillion dollar plan. The problem that surfaces is that it will be hard to keep everyone involved quiet and some of the help decided to spend their cut of the money right away which started to draw some unwanted attention. Tommy and Johnny cannot have this become an issue, so â€Å"months after the robbery, they were finding bodies left and right, â€Å"it was obvious that there was something going on and it was starting to catch up with Henry. Pauly eventually caught up with them and had his men kill Tommy. Henry began to notice he was being followed and he thought he had everything under control but he was wrong. The Federal Government caught up with him â€Å"and now it’s all over, I am and average nobody. † In order for Henry to stay out of prison he had to become a victim of the Witness Protection Program and confessed everything, from the beginning, involving everyone and every detail. He no longer had the power or money he once had. None of it mattered anymore and he now regrets the poor decisions he had made that lead him in this direction. If he would have just listened to Pauly, he may still be living the life he once had. The director uses this end result of regret as the main theme of the movie. It holds as a message, a man may be blessed with good fortune but one bad decision can turn it all around. This film was based on a true story. The main character relives the life of the real Henry Hill to show the general public that it is okay to live life day by day and enjoy what comes with it but make sure that the consequences are acknowledged and be prepared for the outcome of the actions taken. All can be lost by a few bad decisions and there is no going back.

The role of Information Information is a powerful resource and a large expense for many organizations. Information management is the process of collecting information from one or more sources and the distribution of that information to one or more audiences. This maintains the data of an organization. The information system of an organization is essential for the day-to-day activities in an organization. The activities of organizations are mainly coordinated by information and communication. Information is said to be processed data. Data can be defined as the complete range of raw facts and measurements For examples; letters, numbers, symbols, sounds and/or images relating to the events in the organization or its environment. The role of Communication When data is processed the information is communicated immediately to the person who wishes to use it but if it is kept for later use then it must be stored and retrieved when required. So communication is a essential component in organization because it shows how information is sent and received within organizations. The way of transferring information is depending on the structure of the business.Like entrepersonal, pyramid, matrix and independent. In simple terms communication can be identified as the process of transferring or exchanging of information, ideas, beliefs and opinions between two or more parties. Identification 2. Development 3. Selection 4. Implementation Identifying the problem and collecting Information are important in the identification stage, while developing and evaluating alternative solutions are discussed under the second stage, development.Selecting the best course of action amoung the alternative solutions under third stage and put decision into effect and provide report on the progress of solution in the final stage in decision-making.According to the decision-making process collecting information is very important. Decision-making comprises the whole process that involves decision makers upto the point at which the issue is decided.Decision-taking is the function or activity of the responsible authority as in the case of a manager deciding on a course of action. Recognize the need for a decision Define the problem Identification Collect data relevant to the problem Analyse the data and find the root cause of the problem Develop criteria for satisfactory solution Development Generate Alternatives Assess Alternative Selection Select an Alternative Get the authority and implement the chosen alternative Implementation Monitor the feedback Steps in the decision-making Importance of Decision-making Within an organization, different types of decision are taken at different levels.Generally the decisions which are taken by senior management will be affected the business as a whole, and decisions that affect only one aspect of the business will be taken by lower levels of management. David Jennings and Stuart Wattam stated decision-making as an activity that lies at the heart of management. This shows how important is decision-making to an organization. All the actions made by the organization are result of decisions made by the organization itself.Problems of an organization arises because of the limited resources. But to make the organization effective it has to use the available resources. Thus they need to improve their decision-making.On the other hand the competition faced by organizations is increasing day by day. The survival of an organization will totally depend on the quality of decisions they make every day.Organization is a sub system of a social system. Therefore organizations can not work independently because several other systems are interrelated to the organization. My Most Memorable Teachers Essay -- essays papers

My Most Memorable Teachers For some reason or another certain students are drawn to particular teachers while other students are more fond of others. In my life I have studied under three memorable teachers. Teachers with which I was able to connect, to laugh, to share my misgivings. While I may have been close with each of these teachers, it is very clear, in retrospect, that each was very unique, and represented an entirely different class of teacher. The teacher that stands out most in my head is my eleventh grade English teacher. She had a liberal arts background, and enjoyed the classic American writers; Hemingway, Steinbeck, what have you. She was in the class of teachers who was more impressed by actions and honesty than suck-ups and homebodies. She was the kind of teacher who was proud when you informed her that you had skipped her class to go fishing at the river and play bluegrass music with your buddies. She was the kind of teacher who preferred that her students wrote what they truly felt, and not what they truly felt she would like to hear. She was in the rare class of teachers who tried to prepare her students for life after school, not life for school. She was a part of a small class of note-worthy teachers. Another important figure from my eleventh grade year was my eccentric psychology teacher. She represented a class of teachers who are interesting enough to be committed to a loony bin. She fell into what I believe to be the largest class of t...

Delta Airline Case

Delta Airline Case 1-During the 1990’s, none of the five largest air carriers in the United States earned its cost of capital. Why do such low rates of return on investment persist in the airline industry? That’s correct, airline companies margins were below the average for US industries for a long time, especially after the 1978 deregulation. For 40 years, prior to 1978, the airline companies had operated under the regulation of the CAB (Civil Aeronautics Board), which was responsible for managing routes and fares, and thus protected companies revenues and, more important, profitability.Protected by cost-plus pricing, airlines regularly assented to labor union demands and in fact didn’t care too much by the costs incurred by the union deals. Due to the market environment during regulation, the airline companies used to overcharge for tickets, to compensate the costs. After deregulation, airline companies found themselves with high fixed costs and expensive labor . The companies started then running to gain productivity, customer loyalty, explore other routes, decrease costs (using alternative airports, etc†¦ and focus on how to develop a system that would ensure high load factors; the companies started to pursue the returns/ yields. Together with all the costs problems, the big legacy carriers had to fight the Low Cost Carriers that appeared after deregulation, and were gaining market share rapidly. 2-Despite the challenging industry environment, airlines like Southwest and Jetblue earn enviable returns. How? Southwest and Jetblue are part of the LCC that appeared after 1978 deregulation. These companies remained profitable despite all the markets ups and downs, and even after Sept 11/ 2001.Basically, the LCC operated differently from legacy carriers using secondary airports, short turn times, high load factors and different labor costs (flexible work rules vs. profit sharing plans) helping the companies have a much more enthusiastic w orkforce. All this combined with a different mission and vision, so a different strategic planning is what makes them profitable. LCC don’t use legacy carriers as benchmarks, they don’t even look at them as competitors, because their competitors are cars, buses and other ways of travelling.Even the way tickets are issued is different, and also focused on modern way of life, less burocratic, more self-service and, of course, cheaper. This companies have essential competencies: Values (they created a new way of flying, from the ticket purchasing to to the flying experience), Rare characteristics (they are not regular carriers, they created a whole new market), Hard to copy strategies and operational competency. They launched a new substitute product in an existing market, ending in the creation of a new market, where they have so much competitive advantages that others can’t compete. -Why have all the low-cost subsidiaries of legacy airlines, including Delta expre ss, failed? All big legacy carriers launched low-cost subsidiaries, but none obtained success. Some reasons are written below: -They launched substitute products in their existing market, but they should have entered the new market, with a new company -The subsidiaries shared employees with the legacy carriers -They shared burocracy -They didn’t have a clear market and also marketing strategy, different from the legacy carriers -They carried the same costs to operateIn summary, LCC is a total different business than legacy carriers, and can’t be integrated in other business. It has to have its own market strategy, labor agreements, administration, ratios, etc†¦ The only path to success is treating low-cost subsidiaries as a whole different business, inserted in a whole different market. 4-What will happen to Delta if it continues to respond to the low-cost airlines in the way it has in the past? Delta Express was created as Delta’s response for the growth o f LCC’s, primarily in Florida. Express used to operate older Boeings and offer less in-flight services. In the beginning, Express could negotiate with the pilot’s union, resulted in some pay cut. but this agreements were falling apart. More important, all decisions concerning its operations were made centrally, as part of mainline Delta, and even ground services were shared. In fact, they were committing the same mistakes as the other legacy companies when operating their low cost subsidiaries and the only logical path, if Delta continues to operate Express as part of its flying business is the fail path. Low cost is not the core business of Delta and operating a low cost airline is not the core competency of its executives. That combined together cannot lead to success. 5-What are the options available to Delta? Based on the information available to you in the case, what course of action would you recommend? Based on the case, and most important on the experiences of su ccess and fail of low cost carriers, I would recommend that Delta would restructure its operational and administrative office to support Express as if was a total different business: -Totally different staff (another business unit, independent from Delta) -Different business results statements Different cost and capital structure -Different flight equipments (new aircrafts, that would have fewer maintenance needs and high flying hours) -Different services provided in and out-flight -Easier ticket issuing -No Frequent flyer program -Stronger agreements with regulatory institutions over time-table -Different mission, vision and values (â€Å"new company†) -Different routing, pricing, pilots and flight attendance payments program, etc†¦ -A clear target of being the number one low cost carrier in USA and not only diminish the market share of other LCC’s.

Free Essays on The Best And Worst Of Human Nature
